Roy Conference capsules

ALGONQUIN
COACH: Scott Ellison (5th season, 35-37-10 overall)
2010-11 RECORD: 6-10-4 overall, 2-6-0 Roy (4th)
LAST POSTSEASON APPEARANCE: 2010
HOME ICE: North Star Youth Forum, Westboro
ABOUT THE TOMAHAWKS: Ellison is encouraged to have four strong senior defensemen around which to build his hopes for this season. Captain Gage Gillis is a three-year starter and Tim Perron is entering his fourth year. Nate Bautz, a converted forward, brings plenty of offensive skill behind the blue line, while Sean Burns is physical with good defensive instincts. Up front, captains Dan Sheehy (Roy All-Star) and Andy McAuliffe will provide leadership and scoring, while Chris Strobel is a strong all-around player. Juniors Broady Gardner and Tim Lewis will look to improve, and Ellison has been impressed by newcomers Christian Miller and Joe White. Andy Cobb and Max Schmidt are the goalies.

FITCHBURG/MONTY TECH
COACH: Steve Lowney (6th season, 81-21-12 overall)
2010-11 RECORD: 16-6-1 overall, 7-2-1 Coughlin (1st)
IN 2011 POSTSEASON: Div. 3A Central final (lost to Groton-Dunstable, 2-0)
HOME ICE: Wallace Civic Center, Fitchburg
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS: Few teams in state history were as snakebitten as Fitchburg/MT, which made the Division 3A final three years running, only to come up short each time. Now the Bulldogs get bumped up to Div. 3, where the competition certainly figures to be even tougher in the postseason. Standout goalie Dan Finn was among six seniors who departed, leaving the goaltending duties to senior Nick Chapman. Seniors Eric Legere and Korey Wilson, the leading scorers last season, are back and sophomore Connor Casacca looks ready to step into a big role.

GARDNER/MURDOCK
COACH: John Meany (1st season)
2010-11 RECORD: 2-17-1 overall, 0-8-0 Roy (5th)
LAST POSTSEASON APPEARANCE: 2009
HOME ICE: Veterans Memorial Rink, Gardner
ABOUT THE WILDCATS: Longtime assistant Meany has been with the program through the strong times (sectional titles in 2007 and ’08), and now will try to guide the Wildcats out of the lean years and get the program back on track in the Chair City. Seniors Kyle Chumsae (center) and Gabe Kondrotas (defense) return to a team that also was hit hard by graduation and other player losses. Nate Maillet and Justin LeClair are sharing time in net. Phil Wirzbicki, Ryan Gauvin, Jacob Comeau, Mitch Doody, Christian Vogel and Jared Wells are other players to watch.

LEOMINSTER
COACH: Chris Kyne (1st season)
2010-11 RECORD: 13-9-0 overall, 4-4-0 Roy (3rd)
IN 2011 POSTSEASON: Div. 3 Central semifinals (lost to Hudson, 10-3)
HOME ICE: Wallace Civic Center, Fitchburg
ABOUT THE BLUE DEVILS: A former assistant coach for Fitchburg State, Kyne takes over from Cory Beaulac and should be familiar with the program and players – he is a social studies teacher at LHS. He starts with senior forward Garrett DellleChiaie, the QB on the Super Bowl-winning football team who will be just as creative offensively on the ice. Senior captain Dan Williams is praised for his determination and work ethic, and Cody Swift has skill in every zone. An all-sophomore line of Cam Cordio, Matt Richard and Matt LaVanway played a lot as freshmen and will get increased roles. Captain R.J. Johansson anchors the defense with physical play and a big shot, while junior Adam Aubuchon is a strong skater with end-to-end ability. Sophomore Logan Bergeron gets the early call in net, but Ross Potvin, Brandon Jones and Andrew Powers all will push for playing time.

OAKMONT/NARRAGANSETT
COACH: Ryan Carney (3rd season, 30-8-5 overall)
2010-11 RECORD: 9-7-3 overall, 4-3-3 Coughlin (T 3rd)
IN 2011 POSTSEASON: Div. 3A Central quarterfinals (lost to Assabet/Maynard, 4-1)
HOME ICE: Iorio Arena, Ashburnham
ABOUT THE SPARTANS: After making consecutive Division 3A state final appearances (with a title in 2010), Oakmont took a step back last season, but now will get a step up in competition with the bump to the Roy and Division 3. Easing the move will be senior all-star goalie Jason Shell and a good defensive core with senior Alec Zbikowski and junior Jared Paradis. Seniors Zack Comeau and Zach Lemieur were top-five scorers a year ago and return, while sophomore Cam Klahre should play a bigger role.

WESTBORO
COACH: Tom Temple (2nd season at WHS, 4-14-2)
2010-11 RECORD: 4-14-2 overall, 1-7-0 Quinn (T 4th)
LAST POSTSEASON APPEARANCE: 2008
HOME ICE: North Star Youth Forum, Westboro
ABOUT THE RANGERS: Former Hudson Catholic coach Temple is looking forward to his second season with the program, and he is fortunate to have a returning Quinn Conference All-Star in net in senior Ryan Venditti. Helping out in front of Venditti are juniors Greg Alves, Connor Doyle and Mark McMarley, while the forwards include seniors Matthew Demers, Nick Ferretti, Luke Freitas and Andrew MacElhaney.
